PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH UPDATE

For the Washington State University Community
October 6, 2006

Thank you to the faculty, staff and students on the Pullman campus who attended the public forums last week to share ideas with the Presidential Search Advisory Committee and with representatives of Greenwood and Associates, the executive search firm working with us.

You provided valuable perspectives on two key topics: what the next president must accomplish over the next three to five years and what characteristics this person must have to be a good fit with the university.

These same topics will form the agenda for the continuing series of public forums for faculty, staff, students and community members. The locations and dates include:

-- Tri-Cities, October 13, in the East Building on the WSU Tri-Cities campus. The 2 p.m. forum will be in Room 208 and the 5:30 p.m. forum will be in the East Auditorium, Room 266.

-- Vancouver, October 17. The 3:30 p.m. forum will be in the Multimedia Classroom Building, Room 16, on the WSU Vancouver campus. The 5:30 p.m. forum is set for the Spruce Room at the Vancouver Hilton.

-- Spokane, October 19 and 20. The forum on October 19 will be at 4:30 p.m. in the Davenport Hotel Early Bird Room. On October 20, the forum is set for 2 p.m. at the Academic Center Auditorium, Room 20, at the Riverpoint Campus.

A forum in Seattle is planned for October 25, with time and place to be announced.

You are welcome to share your ideas with us by email as well. Please send them to forumcomment@wsu.edu. When the series of forums is completed, we will send another email newsletter to the WSU community with a summary of the ideas shared with the committee.

Another source of information about the search process is the new Presidential Search Web Site. You will find the position announcement, information about how to nominate a candidate, the list of committee members, previous news and updates, and more.

The Web site is at http://presidential-search.wsu.edu/

The Board of Regents and the committee were delighted to learn that Scott Carson, the president and chief executive officer of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, Renton, has agreed to serve on the committee. Scott, a 1972 WSU graduate in business administration, is a most accomplished and supportive alumnus with a breadth of insights about the University. He serves on the WSU Foundation Board of Governors, is chair of the WSU College of Business National Board of Advisors and is on the College of Engineering and Architecture Advisory Board.

With Scott Carson's appointment, the committee has 20 diverse members representing WSU's campuses and constituencies. I am confident that they will bring the best slate of potential candidates to the Regents for their decision in selecting the next president for Washington State University.
